-It had been some weeks since the festival, well over a month had passed and then some, yet still Marabelle Dawnstrider had not returned to Arvandor… Was it a false love then? Had the pressures of stepping into a life that was so very different from hers perhaps scared her? After all, going from a simple milk maid into a position of helper at the most profitable Inn was quite a change, so much so that even a brave person might find it all a little daunting… Or perhaps it was something else? Maybe she was just afraid of commitment? Oh sure it was all rather precious to long for someone from afar, a certain safety in wanting a married man, knowing you are never going to be involved… Everyone does adore that sort of helpless, hopeless love… But… Well given all tht had happened… The words that had been said… Did it seem like that? Surely Garafin would have been wondering what was taking her so long… A trip that should have at best taken a week had well stretched into several, nearing almost two months now, certainly far too long…. Had something happened? Possibly… Yet there were no reports of any accidents on the roads… No deaths… Arvandor was not a place where kidnapping happened to naturally such an event was never a thought… Yet… Where was she? Where was the cart? Surely that would have come back with the driver even if she got cold feet… Then… One day out of the blue a rider came up to the Inn, a letter in his hand addressed for a Mr. Garafin Aranosse, and for him alone…-
“Dear Mister Garafin Aranosse of the Aranosse Inn,”
”Almost two months ago our young miss, Marabelle, had come back from her trip to the Festival of Hearts after staying at your Inn as has been her habit for the last ten years… We were surprised to find her coming along on a cart though, and we feared perhaps she may have been injured, instead we find that she was offered a position at your Inn…
Now, we here in Lillyvale are common folk, we know we lack a lot of the bells and whistles and gewgaws you have in the city… Usually, if someone is wishing to have one of our workers, they send a long a letter of introduction. It’s considered good manners to introduce yourself and explain your position, this way we as her current employers, might have known if we could offer her something better to stay.
Naturally, we asked Marabelle to write you, to ask you what you were offering her officially to work for you so that we might match it… She wrote you well over a month ago, several times in fact, but never once have we received word back from you. At first we thought perhaps return mail was slow…. And then we thought perhaps our outgoing mail was to blame... One of our delivery girls had gone out with milk for you that week, and after a discussion with your cook, it was apparent that you were indeed receiving her letters and ours as he saw them himself… You simply never wrote back.
We had informed Miss Marabelle about it and she went into a bit of shock… She swore to us that you were indeed intending to offer her honest, worthwhile employment, even an education… Sadly, it would appear this is all quite false, something you said to perhaps keep Miss Marabelle’s tender regard? She continued to write you for some time, well after a month had passed, yet still no letters returned. It wasn’t until recently that we noticed something that perhaps might be of interest to you, though she has begged us not to bring this to your attention, we feel it is proper for you to do your duty by a young woman who was a maiden before she left us last.”
”Marabelle came down with a sudden illness not long ago, sudden vomiting and fevers, dizziness and a loss of appetite that was quite noticeable, as well as body pains. We had to call in a Doctor all the way from Arvandor to see to her since we couldn’t have her sick and coming around her fellow workers and the chattle… It took some hours, and no small cost to us I might add, to discover the problem…
Marabelle is with child, though she swears it is impossible as the only man she has lain with is you, yet it is said you are unable to have children.
Given her current condition, we do not feel that she should go off into the unknown without guarantee work from her employer, nor support from the father of her child. As such, we feel that it is only proper that, should you wish to do right by her, then you must come out to Lillyvale and collect her. We would appreciate you bringing a contract of employment for young Marabelle, so that we will be sure of her security and wellbeing, otherwise we refuse to let her go with you. She is a grown young elf yes, but we have raised her since her mother passed on and her father’s family abandoned her, we simply cannot allow her to part from us without a surety of her wellbeing and what her future might hold. You have exactly three days to come out, Mister Aranosse, any later and we will see it as a disinterest and refusal on your behalf.”
”Cordially,
The Merryweathers.
P.s- The Doctor said that the pregnancy is progressing well and that Marabelle will deliver you a healthy child in ten months.
