We remember a time when a woman who was seen to be an adulteress, used to have to wear a Scarlet A on her breast, to advertise to the world what she was. Now, we consider ourselves a very modern, forward thinking town... We no longer hold public executions, or have people put in the stocks, for example... But for once, dear readers, this writer does sincerely wish some things had been kept.... In habit....
Now, my dear readers, please do not think Miss. E here, is a little provincial, I assure you it is nothing of the sort! I do however, miss the days when a woman could tell class from crass, and wholesome from whore simply by looking at a woman's dress. Sadly, too many women today get away with perhaps, a bit too much? After all, it is one thing to break an engagement, but to instantly jump into another one but a month later?
It all seems quite a bit rushed, and under the circumstances of the previous fiance being missing, well...
What is a good, wholesome little town like us supposed to do, I wonder? Should we take the high road, dear readers, and ignore the fact that this newcomer is flaunting every good and wholesome moral we have? Or should we stand together, firm in our resolve, and teach this no good upstart a thing or two about being a civil towns member? Oh but it is quite the conundrum, isn't it, my darling readers?
After all, what can we do really, but endure? Unless, of course, we all banded together... If we were to boycott her, stop her from shopping in our stores, make it harder for her to thrive, perhaps a lesson might be learned here? After all, imagine how many of our young women, your daughters and sisters... How many of them will think it is ok to flit from man to man, to jump from one engagement to another, to flaunt the rules of polite society... What sort of images, what sort of lifestyle, are we representing to our younger generation? I don't know about some, but I can tell you, Miss. E here is Appalled!
I know how tight things are right now, with the terrible weather, and the lack of crops... I realize that many of us are struggling, but isn't it in times of hardship, that we should band together more? Besides, doesn't it seem a bit unfair, that many of us good hard working people are suffering while she seems to be living quite high on the hog?
After all, just this morning we had rumors pouring in about her being seen in town, and with something that quite shocked us all! Now, we all know that she ended up angering the wrong man with her loose and fast attitude, and she got what she deserved even if it did result in the loss of her bastard spawn... And yet just today, we saw her with a Baby! Yes! A Baby! A newborn from what we have heard, a blond little thing, who bears quite the striking resemblance to our little Scarlet Letter herself! It makes us pause to wonder, truly, if she miscarried at all...?
Of course, we will leave that bit up to you, our dear reader! At least Miss. E here can say this, the only upside with our poor boys having to go to war, that ever looming fate over us, at least it should keep our boys safe from the grasping claws of that woman. I would rather have my own son go off to war, to fight valiantly, than for him to fall into the lap of our local succubi.
After all... Who can say that her current little... light-o-love is safe? Our dear Mr. Koehler lasted three months.... Perhaps this new lover will last a bit longer... Or not at all? We can only wait and see, but for this writer right here, I am just glad it is not my son in her claws! If any of my dear beloved readers have any ideas, input, or new tidbits you know Miss. E is always eager to hear from her subscribers!
Always Loving Darlings!
Miss. E
